Pregnancy may linger into the 43rd week from time to time. Some babies are vigorous and healthy through a 43-week pregnancy. The rate of stillbirth begins to rise somewhat, and the rate that babies pass meconium is higher; however, most babies will be born healthy. Protecting you and your baby’s health is the highest priority.
You may be involving your provider in monitoring your baby’s well-being. You have a reason for continuing the pregnancy beyond what is held to be the norm. Some will have declined a recommendation for induction of labor. The norm for labor induction is anywhere from 39 to 41 weeks.
Communicate with your midwife or doctor so they can assess your baby’s well-being and make a plan to check baby every day or two this week. You’ll be weighing recommendations from your provider and considering routine recommendations and those which may be specific to you, such as induction due to high blood pressure, amniotic fluid levels, or fetal heart rate variability.

Adding physiological balance to your body may help labor begin. It can help improve hormonal communication in the body and help baby tuck their chin and apply pressure to the cervix.
Baby may actually begin to lose weight. The vernix is wearing off. Some babies may pass meconium into the amniotic fluid during labor or just as they are born. Again, most babies are born healthy, but there are a few more babies needing help when born this week.
The emotions of a 43-week pregnancy can be a mix of anger and fear including the feelings of the people close to you. I encourage you to take time to communicate your vision and needs in a clear way to gain your doctor or midwife’s understanding of your special request for allowing birth to begin on its own.
Give yourself a little space to hear them also. Some concerns you may hear will be answered in part by these two questions
If either answer is no, immediate induction is likely the best course and shouldn’t be delayed. The emotional results of changing plans deserve a good listener. Time to process your feelings is important and best done after birth under these circumstances.
Affirmations are short, powerful statements that can affect your conscious thoughts. Close your eyes, breathe deeply and slowly, and repeat the following to yourself each day throughout the next week. Fill yourself with breath and feel the joy:
