Getting to 39 weeks is a goal, but 40 weeks is often better. “Experts are learning that scheduling an early birth for non-medical reasons can cause problems for mom and baby,” says the March of Dimes. They go on to explain that before 39 weeks, babies are actually still immature in brain development, while babies born after 39 weeks have health advantages. Plus, spontaneous labor gives baby and birth giver the advantage of hormones like oxytocin that aren’t available when labor starts artificially with medication.

Now your body senses baby’s presence on the “door” of the uterus. Hormones respond. This round, even pressure feels like a fullness low in your center. Later the hormonal response helps the baby and uterus begin smooth labor.
Your baby likely weighs anywhere between 6.5 to 9 pounds. Though your care providers may try to predict your baby’s size through hand palpation or ultrasound, try not to focus on predictions. Many late-term size predictions are just that — predictions that can often be wrong! Trust that your body is growing the right-sized baby for you.
You may continue to notice an increase in vaginal discharge or bloody show, as well as practice contractions. As a mindfulness practice for labor and parenting, pay attention to your body and heart. Instead of pushing away your needs and emotions, listen to them. What do they tell you? How can you nourish yourself deeply at the end of this pregnancy? As you continue listening to what you need now, you’ll grow stronger at listening to yourself during labor and parenting too.
