Embodied Consent

Embodied Consent

Emma Moreland gives insights on improving our manner of informed consent. To be true to one’s self, body awareness is key.

A doctor or midwife needs more than a yes or a no, more than a signature on a form. Awareness of body responses as well as words inform the practitioner whether the full person is agreement to be touched, to have a procedure, for others to be present. Words can agree even when the body says no.

With awareness, a provider can help facilitate congruity in consent.

This video is for anyone with a professional relationship involving touch and how one can benefit from considering how their body feels during the informed consent process and also how to help the person in their care be aware of their body’s communication.

Learn clues for navigating incongruity in consent between our reasoning and our body’s experience.

Emma Moreland lives in Southern California where she is a Certified Professional Midwife and Spinning Babies® Aware Practitioner Instructor. She attends out-of-hospital birth and offers  pregnancy body work. Noticing the disparities in maternal and fetal outcomes in her community, Emma felt there was a need for more Birth Workers of Color so more families to seek physiological pregnancy and birth care.
