Do you know how your body expresses your uniquely changing life?
We enter July with warmth in my hemisphere, and deepest coolness in the southern half of our dynamic Earth. North or South our nations are changing. Bringing forth children in this time is a vote of hope for future leaders who are in tune with our ecosystems and economic transformations. Spinning Babies® offers a set of actions to support childbirth that are not available elsewhere in a single source.
Getting in tune with our bodies in pregnancy means we are more aware and responsive to where our baby lives and how we shape our baby’s body and beliefs. Yes, I say beliefs to bring awareness that the development of the brain is creating the glandular system supporting thought. New science suggests we are electrical beings, so “in tune” suddenly stops being a metaphor and becomes really the truth. Movement, plenty of pure water, live foods (meaning fresh vegetables and fruits) and a bit of salt to taste help our electrical flow! Music, singing, and humming happily recharge our bodies and minds as does getting plenty of sleep.
Baby inside is already learning what to do as a human being. The rhythm of life is being set now. Would you gift your child with the pace of life you would love to lead if you could? Then give yourself a break this month and feel that luscious slow pace in your body. Let’s start a new future with self-compassion and care for what we need. You are in this together!

The Three Principles of Spinning Babies® Balance, Gravity, and Movement support a baby’s development. Balance creates the space for fetal positioning and also hormonal circulation in the brain and pelvis. How much you balance, so to speak, is directly related to the benefits received. Self-care and professional bodywork sessions may offer much in comfort and also the physical functioning of the body.
Gravity refers to maternal positioning, a phrase used throughout childbirth education. We call this “Rest Smart/Move Smart” and you can learn more on our Daily Essentials video, along with a half hour movement session. Movement helps fetal development when the choices support your body balance. Avoid sudden jolts, running, jumping, or weight lifting. At least, wear a pregnancy belt while doing such activities to protect your uterine ligaments from twisting or tipping the uterus. Avoid repetitive twists, such as softball or golf, or at least spend some time twisting the opposite direction.
Gentle twisting in both directions, such as in stretching exercises or yoga is good. For pregnancy or for beginners, the full seated twist yoga pose may be too much for posterior spinal muscles. Don’t try to match your instructors for the full range of the turn in poses twisting the spine. Begin with compassion for muscles that are just waking to your movement potential. It can take a year or more to be limber enough for such a strong twist to benefit and not strain your spine. Gentle cat-cow or spinal flexion-extension exercises done very slowly with the breath before twisting are a good idea but not enough to shortcut the beginner phase. Being in tune means you notice your body signals and going slow teaches you the language of your body.
European experts are exploring the safety of vaginal breech birth. Since the year 2000 change towards cesareans for all breech births, experts have been showing the safety of vaginal breech birth in various studies.
The French PREMODA study is the most famous positive breech birth study. Now a sequel has arrived showing that same data also shows that induction of breech births can have the same safe outcomes as cesarean. Remember, Louwen shows his all-fours position for vaginal breech birth is actually safer than a planned cesarean for selected situations (mothers are screened for anatomy or health issues that wouldn’t support a breech baby going through their pelvis, and labor proceeds without interruptions, like stalls in progress). This July, The Journal of Acta Obstetrica et Gynecological Scandinavia published, “Is induction of labor a reasonable option for breech presentation?”
We have few breech skilled doctors in the USA, Australia, and many countries today. Some families travel to stay in a hotel near a skilled doctor, or choose homebirth or travel overseas to find skilled care. If a pregnant person with a breech baby wants a vaginal birth, spontaneous birth is, of course, safer than induction. But without other risks, induction can be an alternative to cesarean for a few choiceful parents who fit the criteria. This is a good thing.
